EM to Kim: Lose Yourself
Current mood: Adam Beyer: 3.11.06

Eighty-two days after super-hyped second wedding, rapper files for divorce and seeks joint custody of daughter.

Eminem’s encore marriage to high school sweetheart Kimberley Mathers didn’t last long. In fact, the rap star filed for divorce Wednesday in Macomb County Circuit Court, 82 days after saying “I do” at a closely guarded ceremony at Rochester’s Meadow Brook Hall.

A source close to Eminem says the couple had been fighting a lot lately and in recent weeks hadn’t been sleeping under the same roof.

Eminem’s Interscope Records publicist Dennis Dennehy confirmed the split but didn’t offer any further comment.

Court papers cite the reason for divorce as “a breakdown in the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved” — standard language for any divorce complaint in Michigan, says Troy divorce lawyer Gil Gugni.

“That language is in every single divorce complaint,” he said. “In Michigan, there’s only one ground for divorce, and that’s it.”

Divorce filings, which also note Kim, 30, is not pregnant, say the couple entered into a prenuptial agreement a week before their Jan. 14 wedding. Properties are to be divided according to the prenup, specifics of which will likely remain private.

Eminem, 33, has asked the couple retain joint legal and physical custody of their daughter, 10-year-old Hailie Jade Scott.

“Marshall’s primary concern, and maybe his whole concern, is the best interest of his daughter,” said Em’s divorce lawyer, Harvey Hauer, who added the couple would like to maintain their privacy during the divorce proceedings.

Kim Mathers’ attorney, Michael J. Smith, told the Associated Press the filing caught his client off-guard. “It comes to us as somewhat of a surprise. But we have to deal with it, and we will deal with it,” he said.

The case will be heard by Macomb County Circuit Chief Judge Antonio Viviano, who heard the couple’s last divorce in 2001.

The divorce filing marks the latest chapter in Eminem and Kim’s notoriously up-and-down relationship.

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, rapped about killing Kim and disposing of her body on his debut album, 1999’s “The Slim Shady LP,” and a scene from the song is illustrated on the album’s cover. He again fantasized about murdering her in graphic detail on “Kim,” the most inflammatory track on 2000’s controversial “The Marshall Mathers LP,” but admitted in the twisted tale’s chorus, “I don’t want to go on living in this world without you.”

Eminem and Kim were first married in a small ceremony in June 1999 in St. Joseph, Mo. Mathers filed for divorce in August 2000, following a suicide attempt by Kim after an Eminem concert at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The divorce was finalized in October 2001.

By last year the couple reconciled, and Kim was seen at Eminem’s performance at a Freedom Festival fundraiser in Detroit in June. During interviews, Eminem — who won an Oscar for best song for “Lose Yourself” from his semi-autobiographical movie “8 Mile” — began referring to her again as his wife. He announced in December during an interview with WKQI-FM’s “Mojo in the Morning” show that they were planning to remarry.

They did so Jan. 14 at Oakland University’s Meadow Brook Hall in a private ceremony before family and close friends, including fellow rappers 50 Cent, Obie Trice and members of D12 and G-Unit. News crews swarmed the 70-plus-year-old, 88,000-square-foot mansion, trying to catch a glimpse of the action.

WKQI afternoon DJ Beau took about an hour’s worth of calls about the divorce on the air Wednesday. He said most of the calls were in support of Eminem.

“I think (Eminem) was being man-up,” Beau said. “He gave it another shot, and I think it’s very admirable of him (to reconcile with Kim). I think his fans admire him for giving it a second shot, especially when his fans don’t admire her.”

Eminem — whose greatest hits album “Curtain Call: The Hits” has sold 2.2 million copies since its December release and sits at No. 26 on this week’s Billboard albums chart — has been quiet since the wedding ceremony. His only public appearance in the ensuing months was during Super Bowl weekend at the Shady Bowl Super Party at Detroit’s State Theatre, where he performed briefly alongside Trice, D12 and Detroit rapper Trick Trick.

Both Eminem — who sports a “Kim: Rot in Pieces” tattoo on his chest — and Kim have battled drug addiction in the past and both have had skirmishes with the law.

Eminem was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon in June 2000, when he pulled a gun on a bartender he saw kissing his wife at Hot Rocks Caf in Warren. He was given two years’ probation for the incident.

Last year, Eminem checked himself into a Brighton rehab facility for dependence on sleep medication.

Kim found herself in and out of jail and rehab facilities in 2004 after she pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and a moving violation in January 2004. She was sentenced to two years’ probation for the incident.

Jennifer Kesse
Current mood: Microsoft Outlook Remote Access

While in Orlando this past week this was a top news story and it has continued to grow to a national level (John Walsh is now in the mix, look out) – and although there are a number of blogs out there arguing over the attention the “pretty” missing people receive I believe it’s a strong cause nonetheless.  Check the site her family and friends established to help find her.

http://jenniferkesse.com/

I applaud their efforts.  It was crazy to walk around Orlando and see these flyers posted everywhere.
